Each living pod (kitchen, bedroom,
bathroom etc) has an electro-chromic front screen (intended to read
as a picture frame) which is user controlled when inhabited to be clear
or opaque. These face in or out depending on location, and when coupled
with the perforated North wall at Chorlton contol interaction between
inhabitant/inhabitant and inhabitant/street, with deeper levels of personal
space provided in the upper storeys.
At Sedbergh, the locale's time-space events are much more dispersed
and so the pods directly relate to these through the display screens,
with personal space located within the plan controlled through the North
wall.
The buildings are intended to be used at different times of the year
and hence their environmental strategies have been designed to passively
store energy for fast re-heating of the required spaces (see diagrams
below for environmental strategies). The screens to each living pod
display the activity taking place in the alternative site, so not only
is presence controlled, but also enabled in both buildings independant
of location
